About
Project Summary
Climate Smart Research
Climate Smart Research (CSR) is a research & innovation project involving 29 Experimental Research Stations (ERS) across Europe. The project accelerates the transition to climate neutral agriculture in Europe.
CSR contributes to EU climate goals by developing new Climate Smart Farming (CSF) knowledge and innovations, and boost the potential of ERS in realising these goals.
The networks of pilot demonstration farmers and climate smart advisors established in sister projects Climate Farm Demo (CFD) and Climate Smart Advisors (CSA) will be leveraged to ensure that CSR practice-oriented solutions are widely accessible to farmers across Europe.
Objectives
5 Key Objectives
1
To co-develop a conceptual foundation for Climate Smart-research on agricultural ERS, including the role of ERS in their AKIS and uncovering implications on system level to assess effectivity, synergies and trade-offs of Climate Smart Farming
2
To develop cutting edge Climate Smart Farming approaches on 10 selected Pioneering Experimental Research Stations (PioneERS) across 4 pedo-climatic zones with significant mitigation of GHG emissions (-55% to climate neutral)
3
To collect and compare climate tool-kits, services and decision support systems (DSSs) possibly suitable for use on average farms across the EU and scientifically validate emerging solutions using models, expert panels or secondary research
4
To foster the capacity building of research station actors and identify pathways for effective climate research and climate research design processes, supporting the development of practice-oriented CS knowledge, skills and innovations
5
To maximise the impact of CSR by ensuring that project results are effectively embedded within the EIP AGRI strand of the EU CAP Network and national/regional AKIS networks in the Member States and neighbouring countries

WP1
Foundations for Climate-Smart Agricultural Research
WP1 aims to build a shared knowledge base and common understanding among project participants by defining the role of Experimental Research Stations (ERS) in the transition to climate-smart agriculture and developing a multi-actor analytical framework for cross-cutting solutions.
- Lead by: WR
- Leaders: Ellen Bulten, Guy Ziv
WP2
Connecting ERS to support capacity building on Climate Research and Climate R&I Design
WP2 will stimulate capacity building by setting up networking and collaboration between research stations across Europe. It aims to investigate how the multi-actor approach can contribute to a more effective development and more widespread adoption and implementation of practice-oriented knowledge, skills and innovations on climate smart farming.
- Lead by: WR
- Leaders: Jo Bijttebier, Luis Mira, Maria Mendonca
WP3
Researching cutting-edge CSF approaches on Pioneering Experimental Research Stations (PioneERS)
WP3 will develop cutting edge CSF approaches on 10 selected Pioneering Experimental Research Stations (PioneERS) across 4 pedo-climatic zones with significant mitigation of GHG emissions (-55% to climate neutral compared to regional/national reference) and adaptation to climate change.
- Lead by: IDELE
- Leaders: Josselin Andurand, André le Gall, André le Gall, Lisbeth Mogensen
WP4
Adoption of tools, services & smart solutions
The overall goal of WP4 is to collect and compare climate tools, services and decision support systems (DSS) articulated or prioritized in CFD and CSA projects and explore their suitability for adoption and implementation in typical farms across the European Union after experimentation in ERSs across Europe.
- Lead by: Teagasc
- Leaders: Donal O’ Brien, Bridget Lynch, Vasilis Psiroukis, Eirini Kanakari, Spyros Fountas
WP5
Maximising impact from stakeholder engagement to the embedding of results
WP5 aims to maximise the overall impact of the CSR project by developing a strategic plan to raise awareness of its activities, establishing effective two-way communication channels, ensuring the comprehensive dissemination of all project results, promoting the long-term exploitation and sustainability of project outcomes, and identifying innovative business models to support their uptake.
- Lead by: BIOS
- Leaders: Dajana Vujaklija, Slađana Blažević, Gina Geala, Mark Redman
WP6
Project Coordination & Management
WP6 groups the activities which will ensure a timely and quality delivery of the project results, meet its objectives and feed the expected impacts. It includes: the financial and administrative management of the project; the coordination and monitoring of the progress of the project and results quality; and the dynamic planning and monitoring of the project.
