Description
Precision grassland management with a focus on improving efficiency and sustainability. Key activities include: Site-specific fertilization, manure application, weed control, and reseeding → applying treatments only where needed; Forecast systems for predicting winter injury in grass and cereals → enabling timely responses to winter damage; Use of remote sensing data and crop modelling → assessing grass winter survival and optimizing resowing strategies; Managing phosphorus surplus in livestock farming improved handling of phosphorus from animal manure; Reducing nitrogen and phosphorus losses through better manure handling → minimizing nutrient losses through improved manure management; Use of well-adapted forage and cereal species and varieties.
Characteristics
Adaptation practices are essential at NIBIO Særheim. The ERS focuses on: Reducing soil compaction → improved weather forecasting, efficient use of harvest windows, reduced traffic, increased awareness, and technological improvements; Improved utilization of manure
→ site-specific application, recirculation, and reallocation; Efficient harvesting and conservation under wet conditions → supported by technological improvements; Feeding strategies to reduce methane emissions
→ improving feed efficiency.
