Description

Luke Maaninka is a future farm concept, oriented towards grassland farming. Luke conducts research on grass-based, carbon-neutral milk production, the environmental impacts of milk production and energy solutions. The manure management is also one of the research targets. The Maaninka research barn houses 65 dairy cows.

Characteristics

Luke research sites represent boreal environmental conditions with short growing seasons (about 120 days per year), long and harsh winters. Current climatic conditions are erratic in nature leading to lengthening of the growing season and mid summer droughts leading to reduced forage production and farmer profitability. The research goal at Luke Maaninka is reduce CO2 and N2O losses from grasslands and enteric methane emissions from livestock.
