Description
The systemic approach has shown that conventional herds have reduced their carbon footprint through changes in practices that have led to a reduction in direct and indirect GHG emissions (reduction in methane through better management of heifers, reduction in nitrous oxide through reduced mineral fertilisation, reduction in carbon dioxide through reduced energy consumption)
These environmental improvements have been coupled with technical and economic improvements, demonstrating the value of farmers’ commitment to these carbon reduction initiate
Characteristics
The Trevarez Experimental Farm operates a conventional dairy system dedicated to applied research for low-carbon farming. Its mission is to test innovative practices and reduce risk for farmers while addressing climate challenges.
Research focuses on forage production, dairy cow management, health and welfare, calf and heifer nutrition, and growth performance by breed.
Projects aim to optimize herd efficiency, improve feed strategies, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Trevarez serves as a hub for knowledge transfer to farmers, advisors, students and other regional stakeholders through strong partnerships between the Brittany Chamber of Agriculture and the French Livestock Institute.
