Description
At WUR Open Teelten Lelystad we work on the future of arable farming and field production of vegetables. We do this by developing and testing innovative and sustainable new farming and cropping systems, like the farm of the future, agroforestry, strip cropping and integrated crop management. We work on soil health and plant health by trying to increase soil carbon stocks, decrease soil compaction and decrease the use of pesticides.
We consider circularity and improve perspectives of crops for biobased materials. We explore the potential for farmers to produce and store energy. We invest in water storage and do irrigation trials to adapt to a changing climate when at the same time reducing the climate footprint of our research farm.
Characteristics
We drive the sustainable transition of arable farming and production of vegetables in response to major societal challenges. Working closely with farmers, advisors, supply chains, governments, and social partners, we spot and shape new opportunities for the sector.
We develop and test practical innovations that farmers can apply today or tomorrow, linking science with hands-on experience through our networks and experimental farms.
